The game of soccer can be broken down into 9 simple categories of development which encompass every aspect of the game. These are Passing, Ball Control, Dribbling, Shooting, Individual and Collective Defending, Heading, Crossing and Goalkeeping. Each of these has three separate concepts of development. There is the Technical aspect (the How To's). Then the application of technique in opposed circumstances with smaller numbers and some elements of cooperating and opposing players (TecTac). The third level moves the practice into more complex situations with larger numbers of both cooperating and opposing players (Tactical) where the considerations of how a team would function in the 11-a-side game are worked on.

As well, we have included Warm Up activities that will help start, and set the standard for, the practice session.

So a coach might want to use the following template to conduct a practice session: Warm-Up – use the Warm-up activities from the Byte Size Program. The activities can be specific to the theme (but they don’t have to be).

Introductory Phase – This can be a pure Technique activity to further develop or maintain a specific technique (e.g., passing).

Main Theme – This may be a TecTac activity where two or three groups work in small numbers in opposed circumstances (e.g., 3 vs. 1).

Progression – The coach may now want to build the (passing) theme into more of a situation akin to the 11 vs. 11 game (Tactical) such as an Attack vs. Defence practice (e.g., 7 attackers vs. 6 defenders and a goalkeeper).

Don’t forget to finish with a Scrimmage as we are all fun-loving soccer players at heart. See the (link) to show a sample lesson.

While the overall structure of your training session will vary more in these older, more developed, age groups, the system we have developed for you here will allow you to select the category of development you are looking for, and choose between the technical or tactical aspect and the in-between TecTac phase.

You are encouraged to add or remove elements of the activities to personalize the games and challenge your players with the appropriate level of intensity.
