Indoor Sessions: Super Square |
Objective:
- A challenging practice that develops accurate kicking and throwing.
Organization:
- Similar practice to the Super Circle and GK Circle Game of the Outdoor Version.
- Set up cones 3-yards apart on a center line.
- Pairs of players are on opposite sides of the center line 12 - 14 yards apart.
- If there is an odd number the coach joins in.
- One ball between two. Each player tries to knock over their cone. If they succeed they score one point (but must also reset the cone).
- The ball must be passed or thrown from outside their line.
- Pairs compete against one another.
- The goalkeeper throwing competition can be restricted to over arm or under arm throws.
- Use the King's Court Competition system to heighten the intensity (see King's Court - Passing).
Teaching:
- Encourage the players to use pace as well as accuracy of pass.
- Suggest they continue to kick towards the ball even after they have actually kicked (follow through).
- Encourage them to approach the ball at a slight angle to the direction they are kicking (45 degrees).
- Have at least one session where the players must use the "other" foot.
- In the GK throwing encourage the Javelin/Baseball throwing technique.
Target:
- To stay or reach King's (Queen's) Court.
