Safety First!

Safety is the Prime Consideration

In any sport there are inbuilt hazards and the risk of injuries.

Our job as a coach is to minimize those risks.

We have already pointed out in the Introduction to Indoor Soccer that things such as walls, benches and equipment that is left in gymnasia can be dangerous if not attended to. Some gyms have portable goals with nets and this can help make practice more exciting. Specially designed indoor goals can still be a hazard (as can outdoor goals) and you need to set rules regarding the use and misuse of equipment.

In our graphics in the Lesson Plans you will see that we are showing goals and targets by using cones and cone flags. In the example above the 3 v 3 Micro Soccer field has goals with Cone Flags. These represent specially produced Indoor Cone Flags that are made of soft plastic which minimize the risk of injury. Some gyms have these as standard equipment.

However, you should never use outdoor corner flags inserted into large cones. When hit by a strong shot they can become airborne or can smack across the body of a player causing serious injury.

In the graphic below we have marked the goals using 18” cones.

While it is great to have “real” goals and it is more exciting to have cone flags rather than just cones, remember the slogan Safety First. Take no chances with suspect equipment.

Learn to play... play to learn!
